Where to Get Help with Your Personal Finances?

Also available in Suomi

Financial and debt advisers

The situation in Finland is good, because there is publicly funded, statutory advice that is free for clients. You can get tips and support from your municipality’s financial and debt adviser. You do get the impression, though, that it is mostly debt advice and help for situations where people struggle to manage their finances.

More information on the Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority (KKV) website, where you will find the phone numbers for different municipalities.

Balancing income and expenses

You will find good information on planning your own finances on the KKV website, which recommends well-proven basics, such as paying bills in order of importance:

“1. Housing: rent, electricity and water

  1. Other essential expenses (food, phone, day care, insurance)

  2. Finally, other bills”

There is also good guidance on social benefits.

Financial advice more broadly – investment advice and asset management

Accounting firms often offer advisory services, such as tax planning, in addition to bookkeeping.

You will find tips for choosing an accounting firm on the Finnish Association of Accounting Firms website, which explains, among other things, what authorisation means.

Information about investment advice can be found on the Financial Supervisory Authority website.

Information about asset management is also available from the Financial Supervisory Authority.

Investment advice means giving a personal recommendation, and only a company licensed to provide investment advice may give it.

An investment adviser has an obligation to know their client.

The client is responsible for the financial result of the investments.

You will find tips for choosing an investment adviser on the Tarkkamarkka blog.
